The difference between Schottky diode and fast recovery diode

2016-11-15

What is a Schottky diode?

Schottky diode is a kind of Schottky barrier diode based on the barrier formed by the contact between metal and semiconductor. Schottky diodes are low-power, ultra-high-speed semiconductor devices. The reverse recovery time can be as small as a few nanoseconds (2-10ns nanoseconds), and the forward voltage drop is only about 0.4V (0.4-1.0v), while the rectifier current reaches several thousand amperes. Moreover, the reverse leakage current is large, and the withstand voltage is low, which is generally lower than 150V, which is mostly used in low voltage occasions.

What is a fast recovery diode?

Fast recovery diode refers to the diode with short reverse recovery time (less than 5us). Gold doping is often used in the process. PN junction structure is used in the structure, and improved pin structure is used in some cases. The forward voltage drop of the diode is higher than that of the common diode (0.5-2v), and the reverse withstand voltage is mostly below 1200V. It can be divided into fast recovery and ultra fast recovery. The reverse recovery time of the former is hundreds of nanoseconds or longer, while the latter is less than 100ns (nanosecond).

What is the difference between Schottky diode and fast recovery diode?

The recovery time of Schottky diode is about 100 times less than that of fast recovery diode, and the reverse recovery time of Schottky diode is about several nanoseconds! The former also has the advantages of low power consumption, ultra-high speed! The electrical characteristics are, of course, diodes. High switching speed and high voltage withstand can be obtained by using gold doping and simple diffusion process in the manufacturing process of fast recovery diode. At present, fast recovery diode is mainly used as rectifier element in inverter power supply.
